Uttaratantra Shastra

Das Uttaratantraśāstra('Höchste Lehre', sublimes Kontinuum) oder Ratnagotravibhāga('Versform') und sein Vyākhyā - Kommentar sind ein Kompendium der Tathāgatagarbha Literatur, der zu Asangas fünf Abhandlungen von Maitreya zählt. Die chinesische Tradition schreibt es allerdings Sthiramati oder Sāramati zu.

Der Sanskrittext erfuhr tibetische und chinesische Übersetzungen. Der chinesische Tripiṭaka enthält eine Übersetzung in No. 1611, Vol.31 (Taisho Daizokyo Ed.) mit der Bezeichnung chiu-ching yi-ch'eng pao-sing-lun (zurückübersetzt : Uttara-ekayāna-ratnagotra-śāstra). 1931 erstellte Obermiller eine englische Übersetzung.

Inhalt

Das Uttaratantra (I.2) erklärt, dass seine Hauptquelle das Dhāraṇīśvararājasūtra ist, das sich im Dorf Chenhe in der Nähe von Luoyang, Henan, befindet. Das Sarvabuddhaviśayāvatārajñānālokālaṃkārasūtra wird im Uttaratantra zwar nicht ausdrücklich erwähnt, es ist aber wohl die Quelle der im Uttaratantra verwendeten neun Beispiele für erleuchtete Aktivität.

Der Text behandelt besonders die Themen Buddhanatur und Sunyata. Die Sunyata - Lehren der Prajna-Paramita - Sutras werden als wahr aber unvollständig angesehen. Die Buddhanatur sei der höhere Nachfolger.

Sowohl das Srimala Sutra als auch das Uttaratantra beschreiben vier transzendente Qualitäten der Tathagatagarbha : Dauerhaftigkeit, Glückseligkeit, Selbst und Reinheit, die damit dem Dharmakaya entspreche.

Jamgön Kongtrül Lodrö Thaye (1813–1899), auch Verfasser der unter dem Namen „Fünf Große Schätze“ bekannten Sammlung, schrieb den Kommentar „Das unerschütterliche Gebrüll des Löwen“ zum Mahayana Uttaratantra ­Shastra. Seine Darstellung von Maitreyas Text gilt als ein Hintergrund für die Mahamudra - Lehren, der besonders klar und einfach zu verstehen ist.
