Das Mahāvairocana Abhisaṃbodhi Tantra(Mahāvairocana Abhisaṃbodhi Vikurvita Adhiṣṭhāna Tantra) ist eine bedeutender Text des Mahayana. In Tibet zählt dieses Sutra zur Charya Tantra - Klasse.
In Japan ist der Text als Mahavairocana - Sutra bekannt und wird sowhl im Shingon als auch im Tendai verwendet.
Der Text wurde wahrscheinlich in der Mitte des 7ten Jahrhunderts in Nālandā verfasst. Einzig die japanischen und chinesisches Übersetzungen überlebten bis heute. Im Taisho Tripitaka ist das Mahavairocana Sutra Vol. T18, No. 848 in chinesischer Sprache.
Das Sutra bezieht sich nicht auf Buddha Shakyamuni sondern auf Adibuddha Vairocana, der hier als höchster Buddha angesehen wird.

Das Sutra beginnt in dem zeitlosen Rahmen des Palastes von Mahavairocana Buddha(Jpn Dainichi-nyorai) (als Symbol für die gesamte Existenz) mit einem Dialog zwischen Buddha Mahavairocana und seinem Schüler Vajrasattva. In Kapitel 1 legt Mahavairocana den Dharma für eine große Schar von Bodhisattvas dar mit Schwerpunkt auf der Beziehung zwischen Form und Leere.
Weitere Abschnitte behandeln das Mandala und das Abhiṣekha Ritual, das Mandala des Geheimnisses der Sprache, Meditationen über Buchstaben, eine 100 Silben - Meditation sowie 6 Homa-Riten.
Kapitel 2 des Sutra enthält die vier Samaya - Gebote, welche die Grundregeln fürbuddhistische Praktizierende bilden:
- Den wahren Dharma nicht aufzugeben
- Nicht vom eigenen erleuchteten Geist abzuweichen
- Den Austausch mit anderen buddhistischen Lehren nicht zu reservieren
- Anderen fühlenden Wesen keinen Schaden zu bringen
Die Mahavairocana-Sutra ist ein Sutra, das die Tugenden des Mahavairocana-Buddhas erklärt, der die Quelle des Lebens ist. Die Tugenden des Buddha werden durch den Sanskrit-Buchstaben "A" ausgedrückt, der mit "Ah" ausgesprochen wird. Der Buchstabe A ist der Geist, der danach strebt erleuchtet zu werden. Seinen eigenen Geist zu kennen bedeutet die eigene Aspiration nach der Verwirklichung der Erleuchtung zu kennen, was der Sicht des Yogacara nahekommt.
Der Prozess findet in 3 Phasen statt
- Mache die Asprition zur Verwirklichung der Erleuchtung zur Ursache
- Mache großes Mitgefühl zur Grundlage des Handelns
- vollkommen geschickte Mittel(upayas)
