Atharvaveda oder Ātharvāṅgirasa. Die Rishis Angiras und Atharvan bzw. die 2 Rishigruppen der Bhrigus und der Angirasas[1] haben nach der Überlieferung den größten Teil dieses Veda verfasst. Der Atharvaveda stellt eine Sammlung von Mantras (auch eine spezielle Form des Gayatri-Mantras), Zaubersprüchen und Beschwörungen dar und befasst sich mit Heilen, Magie und Brahma.
Schulen
Das Shaunaka zugeschriebene Caraṇavyuha zählt neun shakhas oder Schulen des Atharvaveda auf[2], von denen nur die Texte der Śaunakīya und Paippalāda überlebten:
- paippalāda (südlich des Narmada-Flusses)
- stauda
- mauda
- śaunakiya (nördlich des Narmada - Flusses)
- jājala
- jalada
- brahmavada
- devadarśa
- chāraṇavidyā
Texte
Saṃhitāvidhi, Śāntikalpa und Nakṣatrakalpa gehören zu den der Śaunakīya-Tradition zugeordneten 5 kalpa-Texten[3].
Die 5 Kalpas oder Zeremonien sind nach dem Vishnu-Purana:
- Nakshatra Kalpa - Regeln für die Verehrung der Planeten
- the Vaitána Kalpa -Regeln für die Opfergaben nach den Veden im Allgemeinen
- the Sanhitá Kalpa - Regeln für die Opfer, nach verschiedenen Schulen
- the Ángirasa Kalpa -Beschwörungen und Gebete für die Zerstörung der Feinde und dergleichen
- Sánti Kalpa -Gebete zur Abwehr von Übel
