Das Mañjuśrīmūlakalpa wird oft als erstes Beispiel des indischen buddhistischen Tantra angesehen. Die Sanskrit-Version(Die Grundverordnung von Mañjuśrī) ist wesentlich länger als die chinesischen und tibetischen Übersetzugen.

Das Tantra behauptet, Mantras der Shaiva-, Garuda- and Vaishnava - Tantras seien auch für Buddhisten wirksam, da sie ursprünglich alle von Manjushri gelehrt worden seien. Es enthält u.a. auch Beschreibungen verletzender, sinnlicher und sexueller tantrischer Rituale.

Manjushris Wurzeltext ist allerdings das Manjushrimula(-kalpa)tantra.
