Das Wort Kotodama (Kototama; jap. 言霊, Wortseele) bezeichnet in der japanischen Sprache Wörter, denen eine sprachmagische Wirkung zugeschrieben wird.
Im japanischen Altertum tauchen wortmagische Beschwörungen in der shintōistischen Praxis, in den Norito, wie auch in Kotodama-Liedern der japanischen Annalen oder etwa des Man’yōshū auf.
Der Gedanke wurde von der religiösen Bewegung Ōmoto wieder aufgenommen, die unter dem Begriff kototama eine eigene Silbenmagie einer 50-Laute-Tafel entwickelte.
Ueshiba Morihei, der Begründer des Aikidō, etablierte als Anhänger von Onisaburō Deguchi dieses kototama - Konzept im von ihm begründeten Aikido - Kampfsport.
Es entstand daneben eine Kotodama-Inochi-Medizin, die auf Kōji Ogasawara zurückgeht und von Thomas Duckworth in Amerika bekannt gemacht wurde.
Kotodama werden im Reiki mit Jumon-Vokalen und Symbolen(Shirushi) kombiniert.
