Die Gopala Tapani Upanishad gehört wie die anderen Tāpinī - Upanishaden (Nṛsiṁha, Rāma, Tripurā and Gopāla) zum Atharva-Veda. Im Muktika - Kanon steht sie auf Platz 95. Das Wort Tapani bedeutet 'heiß, streng, Askese, Gold'. Sie ist besonders bedeutend für die Anhänger des Pfades des Krishna Bhakti. Gopala Krishna erscheint hier mit dem Milchmädchen Gandharvi.
