Als Yogini (Sans. yoginī) wird im Hinduismus und im tantrischen Buddhismus ein weiblicher Yogi oder ein weiblicher Rishi(Adept) bezeichnet, der über halbgötttliche Kräfte verfügt.

Ursprung

Der Begriff entspricht tantrischen Vorstellungen, zu denen auch die Matrikas gehören. Im Kathasaritsagara und im Harivamsha Purana werden sie als Begleiterinnen Kalis oder Durgas erwähnt. Das Mahamaya Tantra erwähnt sie ebenfalls.

Oft wird in Indien auch eine nicht einfach einer Göttin zuordbare weibliche Figur als ‚Yogini‘ bezeichnet. Yoginis werden meist zweiarmig und nur manchmal vierarmig dargestellt, wobei sie auf dem Rücken eines Reittiers (Vahana) und manchmal auch auf einer menschlichen Figur stehen, die zumeist böse und unheilvolle Kräfte verkörpern. Einige Yoginis werden in Meditationshaltung dargestellt.

Sie sind mit der Fähigkeit versehen, den normalen Alterungsprozess zu beherrschen durch innere Umwandlung der Sexualkraft(urdhva-retas) und oft auch den Tod (divya sharira - unsterblicher göttlicher Körper).

Daher werden sie meist jung und schön und verführerisch dargestellt. Selten bildet eine Yogini die alte ausgemergelte Göttin Chamunda ab, die aber eine allegorische Bedeutung hat. Eine Yogini ist auch Vinayaki (Vinayak ist ein Name Ganeshas). Eine Yogini mit Namen Ekapada[1] (Einbeinig) stellt einen Lingam zur Schau.

Eine buddhistische Yogini ist die Vajrayogini.

Yeshe Tsogyal (757-817 n.Chr.), eine der 25 Hauptschüler Padmasambhavas, ist als die erste tibetische Yogini bekannt.
