Tsongkhapa mit seinen Hauptschülern

Je Tsongkhapa Lobsang Drakpa(Losang Dragpa), allgemein bekannt als Je Rinpoche, wurde 1357 in der Tsongkha- Region von Amdo in Osttibet geboren. Das Manjushrimulatantra sieht ihn als eine Emanation von Manjushri an.
Er erlangte seine ersten Belehrungen vom vierten Karmapa Rolpé Dorje und wurde dann von Döndrub Rinchen, einem Meister des Yamantaka - Tantra, emporgehoben.

Tsongkhapa praktizierte schon im Alter von 7 Jahren fortgeschrittene tantrische Praktiken.
Im Alter von 16 reiste er nach Zentraltibet und studierte dort umfassend die Sutras und Tantras verschiedener Traditionen mit Lehrern wie Sakya Lama Rendawa Shyönnu Lodrö und dem Nyingma Dzogchen Meister Lhodrak Namkha Gyaltsen. Er erlangte schnell die Meisterschaft in diesen Praktiken.

1409 gründete Tsongkhapa das Kloster Ganden bei Lhasa. Er hinterließ der Welt 18 Bände, die hunderte von Texten zu allen Aspekten des Buddhismusses enthalten und schwierige Punkte von Sutra und Tantra erläutern.

Gampopa und Tsongkhapa erweiterten den kurzen Lamrim - Wurzeltext von Atisha zu einem philosophischen System. Aus seinen Lehren ging die Gelug - Tradition hervor, wo seine Große Darlegung der Stufen auf dem Pfad zur Erleuchtung (tib.: Lam Rim Chen Mo) regelmässig gelesen wird.
