Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) war ein spirituell engagierter bengalischer Dichter, Philosoph, Komponist, Musiker und Maler, der vielfach auch als als „Vater der modernen Kunst Indiens" bezeichnet wird.
Er war Brahmo-Samaj-Anhänger und wurde später auch als Gurudeb bezeichnet wurde, ein Ehrentitel, der sich auf Guru und Deva bezieht.
1913 erhielt er als erster Asiate den Nobelpreis für Literatur.
