Japa (Sans. japa, flüstern, murmeln; Pāḷi, das Murmeln japati =murmeln, flüstern) bedeutet das laute, leise oder gedankliche Wiederholen eines Mantras(Purashcarana), Gebets, Gottesnamens oder auch von Texten heiliger Schriften.

Japa wird im Sikhismus als Simran und im Mahayana u.a. als Nianfo praktiziert. Im Vajrayana sind Mantra-Wiederholungen ein essenzieller Teil der Praxis.
Ein gebräuchliches ritualistisches Hilfsmittel ist die rosenkranzähnliche Mala, besonders bei halblauter Wiederholung.

Mantra Meditation

Japa wird vielfach auch als mentale Meditation über ein Mantra praktiziert.

Das Ziel des bewussten gedanklichen Wiederholens bestimmter Klänge oder Keimsilben(Bija) ist das Erreichen eines meditativen Zustandes. Es existieren Varianten mit Konzentration und mit Kontemplation. Eine wirklich tiefe Meditation setzt eine anstrengungslose Konzentrationsfähigkeit voraus.

Eine oft verwendete Praxis ist eine damit verbundene Verlagerung der Aufmerksamkeit auf bestimmte Chakren und Körperteile, bei letzteren auch mit speziellen Mantras.

Diesbezüglich war im Hinduismus die Einweihung ( Mantra Upasana ) durch einen Guru üblich.

Die Krönung der Mantra-Meditation ist die Nada-Meditation, die oft auch mit einem Hilfsmantra praktiziert wird.
