Die Gopala Tapani Upanishad gehört wie die anderen Tāpinī - Upanishaden (Nṛsiṁha, Rāma, Tripurā) zum Atharva-Veda. Im Muktika - Kanon steht sie auf Platz 95. Das Wort Tapani bedeutet 'heiß, streng, Askese; Zuerhitzendes, Gold'. Die Upanishade ist besonders bedeutend für die Anhänger des Pfades des Krishna Bhakti. Gopala Krishna erscheint hier mit dem Milchmädchen Gandharvi.
