Der Ausgangspunkt des Dzogchen ist Rigpa: Sofortige Erleuchtung. Die Lehren des Dzogchen enhalten daher ngöndro(Vorbereitung; Rushan), das vier Meditationspraktiken mit dem Ergebnis von Rigpa enthält. Dadurch soll die spontane Sichtweise verfestigt werden, dass alle inneren und äußeren Phänomene als ein nie versiegender Strom aus dem Gewahrsein selbst hervorgehen.

In der Dzogchen-Meditation wird zuerst ein Zugang zum Alaya(tib. kun-gzhi, Skt. alaya; Basis für alles) für Gewohnheiten erlangt, dann zum strahlenden Rigpa und dann zum Essenz-Rigpa.
